Day 1: Getting Started
Day 1: Unboxing & Setting Up Your Machine
Goals, success, and pitfalls of this stage
Goal of this Stage:
Unbox and set up your PAP Machine; connect any companion application (e.g Resmed) to guide setup.
What success looks like:
Machine assembled and powered on, app paired, settings match your prescription, ready for a first-night trial.
Common Pitfalls:
Manually changing pressure without your clinician’s okay; skipping the companion app; incomplete setup (loose connections, missing parts).

Pro Tip
Take your time to get comfortable with the equipment. Understanding your machine can remove fear and prevent noncompliance later on.
Weeks 1-2: Getting Comfortable
Weeks 1-2: Getting Comfortable with CPAP
Goals, success, and pitfalls of this stage
Goal of this Stage:
Build a nightly habit and dial in comfort (fit, humidity, ramp/EPR) so you can keep CPAP on through the night.
What success looks like:
≥4 hrs/night on ≥70% of nights (trending toward 6–8 hrs), low leak alerts, and fewer wake-ups.
Common Pitfalls:
Over-tightening the mask, leaving humidity unchanged despite dryness, removing the mask after a wake-up and not putting it back on.
Addressing Dry Mouth
If you wake up with a dry mouth, increase your humidifier, use a chin strap with a nasal mask, or talk to your provider about switching to a full-face mask if nasal breathing is difficult.
Fix Rainout (Water in Tubing)
If you notice water or gurgling in your tubing, place the PAP machine below your mattress, use heated tubing, and consider a tube cover to reduce condensation.
Prepare your CPAP equipment
Each night, fill the humidifier, check your mask for a proper fit, and inspect for any air leaks.
If your AirSense 11 reports a high leak, inspect and gently reshape the outlet adapter ring to improve the seal, and contact support if the alert continues.
Pressure Intolerance
If the air feels too strong, turn on the Ramp feature so pressure starts low and builds gradually, and practice wearing your mask while awake to help your body adjust.

Month 1: Building a Routine
Month 1: Building a Routine
Goals, success, and pitfalls of this stage
Goal of this Stage:
Make CPAP a nightly habit with a consistent sleep schedule and comfortable settings.
What success looks like:
≥4 hrs/night on ≥70% of nights (trending toward 6–8 hrs) with minimal leaks or wake-ups.
Common Pitfalls:
Inconsistent schedule, taking the mask off after waking, or ignoring comfort/cleaning causing leaks/irritation
Routine Development
Set a consistent sleep schedule: Go to bed and wake up at the same time every day to help your body adjust.
Practice good sleep hygiene
This includes no screens an hour before bedtime and limiting caffeine and alcohol during the day.
Prepare your CPAP equipment
Each night, fill the humidifier, check your mask for a proper fit, and inspect for any air leaks.
Pay attention to sleep quality
Monitor how you feel in the mornings to gauge if your CPAP therapy is working effectively.
Potential Benefits
Apps and devices can help you track your sleep patterns, providing insights into your progress.

Months 2-3: Solving Issues, Fine Tune Your Experience
Months 2-3: Solve Issues, Fine Tune Your Experience
Goals, success, and pitfalls of this stage
Goal of this Stage:
Make CPAP feel effortless every night—fix leaks/dryness/noise, dial in comfort (humidifier, ramp/EPR), and lock in your routine.
What success looks like:
6–8 hrs use on most nights (≥80%), low leak rate, no bothersome dryness/noise, AHI in target, waking more rested.
Common Pitfalls:
Over-tightening the mask, ignoring humidifier/ramp/EPR tweaks, changing pressure without clinician OK, skipping cleaning/replacements, or swapping gear before fixing fit.
Adjusting to the Mask
Wearing CPAP while reading or watching TV makes bedtime easier. Aim for a calm, seated start and a few deep breaths.
Stop Mask Leaks
If your mask hurts or leaks, loosen and refit it so it’s snug but comfortable, try a different size or style if needed, and consider a virtual mask fitting with an Apria Sleep Coach.
Noisy CPAP
CPAP machines should operate quietly, but if you notice excessive noise, check for loose connections, worn-out tubing, or consider upgrading to a quieter machine model.
Troubleshoot Common Issues
Noise, pressure discomfort, rainout, or app pairing—solve the common hiccups in under a minute.

Months 3-6: Maintenance & Replacement
Goals, success, and pitfalls of this stage
Goal of this Stage:
Maintain therapy by cleaning weekly and replacing parts on schedule (filters 1–3 mo, cushion/mask 3–6 mo, tubing ~6 mo) with auto-resupply.
What success looks like:
Low leaks and stable AHI with fresh parts in use and the next order scheduled.
Common Pitfalls:
Overusing worn parts, inconsistent cleaning, and not tracking or re-fitting after replacements.
