FAQ's
Q: What size flange comes standard with Ameda® breast pumps?
A: The Ameda® HygieniKit® Milk Collection Systems come with a standard size 25.0mm flange that works well in general for most moms. But since all mothers are unique, Ameda® caters for this with the Ameda® CustomFit™ Breast Flange that comes in sizes of 28.5mm and 30.5mm respectively.
Q: How do you measure which is the correct breast flange?
A: We have included a CustomFit™ Breast Flange Sizing Guide/Chart that can assist you with this. For further convenience, we have added a quick video tutorial that can also assist with helping you select the correct breast flange size.
Q: How do I know what my current flange size is?
A: By using a ruler or measuring tape, find the diameter of your nipple (the horizontal width across it) in millimeters (1 cm = 10mm). Measure the nipple alone, do not include the areola, which is the outer edge around your nipple. Add 4 mm to this measurement, so if your nipple is 24 mm across, your flange size would work out to 28.5mm being the correct flange size for you.
Q: Is it better for the flange to be too big or too small?
A: Flanges should fit comfortably and be large enough for your nipple button to fit in the tunnel but not so big that your areola tissue gets pulled into the tunnel. Due to nipple elasticity variation among different mothers, sometimes there will always be areola tissue in the tunnel despite proper sizing.
Q: Should I pump breast milk every time I leak?
A: Although awkward and often quite embarrassing, leaking breasts are a sign for moms that they are lactating properly. Breastfeed or breast pumping as often as possible and not skip feedings or pumping sessions may help to limit how often or how much your breasts leak.
A: 0.5 to 2 ounces total is normal for a pumping session. Breast milk supply can change or dip so this should be considered the average.
