Q: How do I know which size breast flange I need for my breast pump?
A: You will need to use a tape measure or ruler and measure the diameter width across your nipple in millimeters. Do not include measurements for your areola, the larger part around your nipple. This is how you can determine and select your breast flange size based on your measurement
Q: How can I tell if my breast flange is too big or small?
A: A few of the signs to look out for include:
- If you find that your breasts are either moving around too much or too little while breast pumping. While pumping, movement of the breast should be gentle, similar to the movement of your nipple within the tunnel.
- You feel pain or discomfort due to your nipple rubbing the sides of the flange tunnel.
- You can tell if the flange is too big when your nipple and part of your areola are actually being pulled into the tunnel.
- A good indicator of a small flange is when your nipples are red or white after pumping. .
- If your breasts feel heavy and full even after pumping, it means that all the breast milk hasn’t been expressed correctly and your flange could be possibly too big.
Q: Why do my nipples tend to swell when I breast pump?
A: This can occur due to your nipples being under constant suction and pressure while still being exposed to breast milk during the pumping session.If the swelling does not go away after 5-10 minutes, you may be using the wrong size flange.
Q: Can the wrong breast flange size cause mastitis?
A: Unfortunately yes. An incorrectly sized breast flange can lead to blocked milk ducts that are extremely painful and can lead to an infection of the duct itself which in turn becomes mastitis.
Q: Should I keep breast pumping if no milk is coming out?
A: When breast pumping, you should theoretically continue until milk isn't coming out any more. If you feel that you are extracting too little breast milk in general, try to pump a little while longer after the milk stops flowing in order to aid in boosting your milk supply.
